Kettles and carbon dioxide emissions

I've just bought this new book (How we can save the planet by Mayer Hillman). Small nugget: "Using a gas hob-top kettle can save more than half the carbon dioxide emissions of an electric kettle". So new kettle courtesy of John Lewis. How old-fashioned! And how typical that what we used to do was better for the planet...
