Christmas cards for kids, bah humbug!

It's a bit of a bugbear for me. The school and the playgroup set up postboxes for the children to send cards to their friends, and of course this is very tempting, if not socially essential. Which means that muggins here found herself making (!?) 30 or so cards for two little girls to send to people they see every day. I'm not sending cards to people I see every day, just to people I don't see which is still over 50 cards. In older daughter's school assuming every child sends around 15 cards, that's at least 3000 cards. Which is absurd and a ridiculous waste of money/paper and I know they love to send them, and it's fun to be the postman delivering them to the children in different classes, but it is still ridiculous. I however had no courage in my convictions and after much muttering to other mothers in the playground, I still gave in this year. Hurrumph.

Tricky. I felt just like this when mine were small and as they got older tried to institute a card display board. I do think that smaller children just dont get that and love the pleasure of opening piles of cards. go with the flow, it doesnt last long!

I don't have children, but I get a similar problem at the office. Everyone giving a Xmas card to the five folks who sit next to them all year round. It's bloody absurd, and I do opt out - vocally and pointedly - from the whole ridiculous charade.

Christmas, Christmas. When nightmares come true.

It's a tricky one, atleast for children, who love giving and receiving cards. But for adults there really is no excuse. I work in a primary school and used to hand out anything up to 20 cards every Christmas, until we decided to make one card for everyone to sign and a collection box for an agreed charity. That was a couple of years ago and we haven't looked back.
