Compost

Today's job is turning over the compost heap. I can't say I'm looking forward to it but I've been putting it off for days if not weeks now. I'm beginning to regret getting those cone shaped bins from the council as they are a bugger to get into and sort out. And I just read somewhere - can't recall where - that when you bung your Bokashi contents in you're supposed to mix it in not just put it on top (Bokashi experts out there, please enlighten me). So I don't think today is going to be a pleasant experience. There may be pictures or I may be too squeamish. Still I don't think there's a rodent problem this time which is why I'm doing it and not Tom who had to despatch the last residents.

How did it go?

I just chuck my Bokashi in and then use a pitchfork to mix it into the stuff that's already there. I don't mix it very well because my compost bin is huge and I am not that much taller than it, so it's kinda hard for me to get in there and give it a proper mix. I just give it a lackadaisacal couple of stabs. Everything seems pretty happy in there.

My advice is not very good because I'm a bit laissex faire... !!

Pitchfork's are brilliant. If you don't have one, grab one!

You can also get fancy shmancy compost aerator things - they are arrow-shaped, so you plunge the arrow in and the pull out again and that mixes everything up pretty nicely. But they're expensive and a plunge and twist with the pitchfork does roughly the same thing, but perhaps not as efficiently.

Went well. I stank afterwards but actually it wasn't that gross. The Bokashi stuff does look like it needs breaking up a bit more than I do though but I'm impressed by how much everything has rotted down so fast. I'm pretty sure the Bokashi has got something to do with it.

Oh dear, now you've reminded me i need to turn my bin. Not looking forward to that at all - i think i'm much more likely to find slugs and woodlice than mousies!
